Blanket Design for J-Box Cutouts

Thermocouples (TC) and supports are the main objects that determine the width of a blanket. Blanket cutouts for heater arrays with exposed J-Boxes, with the aid of our worksheet, are easily figured as follows:

For even heat profile heaters should be evenly spaced along the barrel or line with the Thermocouples exactly in-between the heaters. (Theoretically)

Heater Spacing

FIG. NOTE: Right-click the mouse button on the image below and choose "Zoom In." Press and hold the left mouse button to move the image around. Right-click > "Show All" again to zoom all the way out.

M1 above measures 21" between the TC/support

Divide by the number of heaters (4)

Heaters evenly spaced at 5-1/4"

TC/support is between the heaters at 2-5/8

Your Measurements Become the Part No.

Note: Circumference and width measurements are rounded up to the next whole inch. These rounded measurements become our design code/part no.

Only four (4) types of information are needed.

  1. The first measure is the blanket inside circumference measurement around the heaters including the spring bolts if present.
  2. The blanket width measurements between the TC/supports (or other types of obstacle).
  3. The J-Box letter associated with the size of the J-Box cutouts. See table below.
  4. And last the number of heaters within each of the blanket areas.

Surveying a Line (Walkthrough)

Now let's say the above figure of a ø6" barrel is yours. It has Ceramic or Mica Band Heaters. You want to survey it and order blankets to insulate it, but not the J-Boxes.

The blanket areas/zones are labeled; Rear, M1, M2 . . . FRONT.

Here' s how to determine the Part Nos. for those areas.

Start at the Rear of the machine, name the zone "REAR"

Part No. Prefix for ceramic/mica band blankets with cutouts is CSTM.

Circumference = 22.5" round this up to 23".

Rear width = 5-1/4" round this up to 6" and make it a double digit 06.

J-Boxes fit in a 2.5x4.5 cutout, letter R from the chart below.

The number of heaters in the zone (1).

REAR. . . CSTM-2306R1

The next zone is M1. Repeat the steps above.

M1. . . CSTM-2321R4.

In zone M2 you get;

M2. . . CSTM-2316R3.

In zone M3;

M3. . . CSTM-2311R2.

The last zone is "FRONT"

FRONT. . . CSTM-2306R1
