Cities and States Take Part in Energy Efficiency Incentives to Help Residents Save Money and Energy

We have devoted a few blog posts to some energy incentive programs available to plastics manufacturers that provide rebates for the purchase of products that aim to increase energy efficiency. We are excited to see a trend in this country – various cities and states “going green” and implementing their own energy efficiency programs. As more and more take notice to the benefits (lower energy bill, for one), the more programs you will begin to see, ultimately resulting in less greenhouse gas emissions.

Residents of St. Peters, Missouri recently implemented three energy efficiency programs that are expected to save residents and the city money and reduce energy waste, says a press release released on April 20. The city received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant in 2009 for the amount of $512,800. City officials immediately went into action to implement a scope of projects. The successfulness of their initiatives is greatly due to their excellent ability to encourage the community to be active and involved through the process. By organizing outreach events, such as special drive-thru events where residents drove to a specific location and received a free energy efficiency product without leaving their vehicle. During one of these events, St. Peters was able to distribute 600 Energy Star programmable thermostats and 60,000 CFL light bulbs.  City officials believe that each thermostat can save an average household about $180 a year.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, an independent nonprofit organization dedication to advancing energy efficiency, released information in March applauding the state of Arkansas for its recent investments in energy efficiency programs across all four of the state’s economic sectors – residential, commercial, industrial and transportation. Not only will these programs greatly reduce their carbon foot-print and lower energy expenses, they will also create over 11,000 jobs. Increasing employment opportunities in the state also contributes to economic and social growth throughout the state. Other states should take notice of Arkansas’ efforts and their ability to encourage solidarity to expand their energy efficiency efforts. This eagerness to reach above and beyond has caught national attention, and can give them an edge over other states on becoming the most energy efficient state in the Southeast.

Some of Arkansas’ new policies will address fuel reduction, traffic congestion and expand transportation options for its growing population. Other long-term goals include weatherization assistance for inefficient homes, energy-efficiency financing for the agricultural sector and investments in the efficiency of public buildings.

Making conscience energy conservation efforts extends beyond wanting to reduce energy waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency at the state and city level lead to economic and social growth. These changes create employment opportunities and generate revenue and sustainable markets, promoting growth at all public levels.
