Paying bills is inevitable. It’s the one task that many of us dread the most, mainly because of the empty feeling it leaves in our bank accounts. So, what’s a better feeling than knowing, over time, you are saving your family some extra dough every year on your home electric bill?
It seems like everyone out there has a few tips and tricks to help others reduce that or conserve this, so we are here to share with you a few energy saving, cost reducing, money-in-your-pocket tips to help you around the house.
You are probably already familiar with the typical energy conservation tips like turning the lights off when you leave the room and don’t run the air conditioner when you have the windows open. But did you know that by adding insulation to your water heater tank can reduce standby heat losses, resulting in lower energy bills?
If you’re not sure if you’re loosing heat, just touch your water heater tank. If it feels warm to the touch it needs insulation.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, unless your water heater’s storage tank already has a high R-vale of insulation, adding insulation will save you around 4%-9% in water heating costs. An R-value indicates an insulation’s resistance to heat flow. When purchasing an insulation solution for your water heater tank, keep an eye out for it’s R-value, the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness, says the U.S. Department of Energy.
If your monthly household utility bill is $200, insulating your water heater tank can save you over $210 a year. The payback is instant and you can find pre-cut water heater insulation blankets on-line or at your local hardware store for about $20.
