Building Blocks of Energy Efficient Production

For most of us, Legos bring back fond childhood memories (or slightly less fond memories of walking barefoot through our kids’ rooms). Whatever we think of, it usually isn’t energy efficiency. Early this spring, the building block giant received the Arburg Energy Efficiency award for outstanding commitment to energy efficiency.

The 80 year old injection molded plastic toy company introduced its energy and environmental management system in 2007. In the first three years, the company increased energy efficiency by 35% and aims to improve efficiency by an additional 5% each year according to shareholder reports.

Shooting for 100% operation from energy renewable sources by 2020, Lego made significant strides reducing energy and water consumption. The company, more profitable than ever before, recently announced a switch to FSC certified packaging to further reduce its carbon footprint.

In celebration of the toymaker’s inspiring attitude and actions towards energy efficiency – and because we think they’re just too cool not to share – we’ve gathered some of our favorite industrial Lego goodies from around the web. [Read more…]

Intumescent Coatings: The Nitty Gritty Details

If you’ve searched for any type of passive fire protection or petroleum facility fireproofing lately, you likely found a good amount of information about fire-retardant intumescent coating systems, but very few sites actually answer three common questions:

  • What are intumescent coatings and how do they work?
  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of using intumescent systems?
  • How do intumescent coatings compare to other fire protection options?

firepro, fire protection, intumescent coating, intumescent fire protection, ul1709Intumescent Coating Basics

As with any fireproof system, intumescent coatings are designed to delay the failure point of steel equipment or structures during a rapid temperature rise, or UL 1709 rated, fire. Applied as a spray coating or a molded on epoxy coating, intumescent systems chemically react and expand when exposed to a fire and to create a carbon-based layer of char.

Design installation of an intumescent coating system differs slightly based on the type of system purchased. In petroleum and petrochemical applications, most coating systems involve shipping equipment to the vendor for measurement and design purposes. Vendors create fitted, epoxy coating molds, prepare equipment surfaces and then permanently apply the systems to equipment.

Safety Checklists for Manufacturers

safety, checklists, manufacturing safety, industrial safetyEven in the safest of facilities, failure to implement safety planning measures can lead to major injuries and in some cases, fatalities in the workplace. One of the most important planning tools is a clear safety checklist that lists the necessary conditions to ensure safety for all facility personnel.

Listing OSHA requirements and applicable safety laws that apply to your plan offers a solid starting point for creating a detailed safety checklist. Most likely, your company has already researched these requirements and taken steps to ensure compliance. Locate previous OSHA inspection reports to pinpoint any previous safety concerns.

Various industrial societies and safety research organizations offer safety knowledge and recommendations beyond minimum standard requirements. In addition to a wealth of free online information, both the American Society for Testing Materials and Underwriter’s Laboratories offer safety research, recommendations for testing safety products – think expert recommendations for building materials or fire protection products. Additionally, both organizations offer safety consultants and in depth training courses for plant managers, safety personnel or equipment operators.

When compiling a safety checklist, consider six main topics or sections to address:

  • Hazardous material handling
  • Fire prevention and protection
  • Hot surfaces and burns
  • Avoiding falls and spills
  • Personal Protection
  • Safe equipment operation

A Quick Guide to Energy Management Software

keyboard, energy management software, software, computer controlled systemsIf you’ve picked up any industrial trade journal or browsed the business section of the news for energy related topics, you’ve probably read about energy management software of some type. Everyone seems to agree that energy management software is the next big thing, but how will such systems actually help your business?

Energy management software generally provides options for evaluating effectiveness and ROI of efficiency projects or for measuring, tracking and controlling energy consumption to eliminate waste.

Software for Energy Efficiency Projects

With so many options to choose from, determining which energy efficiency projects to implement might seem a difficult task for any industrial facility. Employees tasked with reducing energy costs often have limited budgets and must prioritize new projects and plan for future implementation.

Through the Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) division the U.S. Department of Energy offers free calculators and software tools that allow you to analyze opportunities to reduce energy costs and help you calculate possible energy savings gained from energy efficiency projects. These tools help calculate the potential return on investment or paybacks for projects, like high temperature insulation jackets, allowing you to purchase the most cost-effective projects first and achieve the greatest amount of energy savings.

Beyond software tools, the EERE also provides a variety of training courses, seminars and webinars for those interested in reducing energy costs with software. Segmented by industry, these resources offer significant insight into options available for you to reduce energy costs.

Energy Management Systems

Available as basic software that controls lighting systems or more complex systems that measure, analyze and control energy consumption, efficiency software offers many custom options for improving efficiency. Sophisticated software systems monitor every aspect of energy consumption and manufacturing emissions, store data that you can use to pinpoint energy waste and send web or cell phone alerts notifying you of any issues.

With such a large range of software options available, determining which services you need isn’t always easy. According to a recent report by business research leader Verdantix, the best method for choosing appropriate management software lies in implementing readily available, free software, choosing a reputable software provider, and clearly outlining your needs prior to the sales process.

What systems are you currently using to monitor your energy usage?

Recession and Refineries: The Environmental Impact

refinery, environmental, green, oil and gas, petroleumIn today’s tough economy many manufacturers, including refineries, search for ways to reduce overhead costs. This desire to operate facilities more efficiently has prompted petroleum refineries to increase research efforts, leading to an overall reduction in waste and more environmentally friendly policies.

Recycling Energy and Gas
Oil and gas companies have researched ways to reduce the amount of wasted energy released into the environment during processing for decades. More than ever before, petroleum refineries are investing in systems to recapture or recycle this released steam or gas.

Partnering with neighboring energy recovery experts or installing on-site systems allows facilities to recapture and reuse formerly wasted energy and gas resources. One such system, called a hot gas expander, enables refiners to recover heat energy from the fluid catalytic cracking process commonly used in gasoline manufacturing.

The environmental benefit of hot gas expander technology, according to a report by a GE Oil & Gas employee, stem from a reduction in the amount of energy and electricity required to operator machinery. This significantly lowers the carbon dioxide and nitrogen emissions of refineries that generally use large amounts of electricity.

5 Essential Tools We Can’t Live Without

This morning we’re sharing 5 tools the UniTherm marketing team just can’t live without. There’s more than what’s on this list, but we picked these because they are all free (or offer a really great free version). Try them all out and let us know what you think in the comments below!

1. Jing by TechSmith– a screen capture and screencast tool ideal for quick a quick grab and share of your desktop. We use Jing at least a hundred times a day. Need to explain to someone for the eighty billionth time how to do a mundane task on their computer? Just take a quick screencast with Jing and they’ll have a video tutorial to keep forever (they’ll probably still ask you again though). Jing sits on the edge of your screen for a quick grab when you are ready to use it. Select the portion of the screen you want to capture and if you want a video or image. Grab your capture and you’re ready to share, you can even do some call outs, arrows, and text boxes on images. Your sharing options are:
    • Upload to screencast.com – my favorite, get a ton of free storage and Jing automatically places the link on your clipboard. Simply paste into an email, IM, Twitter, or anywhere else you want to share it.
    • Upload to your FTP server – a great option for adding tutorials to your website or blog.
    • Copy – places the image itself on your clipboard for a quick paste into email, a document, or anywhere else you like.
    • Save to directory – pre-select a destination for all your Jing files on your desktop or local network (I like to send mine to Dropbox).
  2. Dropbox– The absolute, hands down, best way to backup, store, share, your files and access them anywhere. I have Dropbox installed on all of my computers, on my phone, and I’ve pretty much converted the whole UniTherm clan over to it as well. Dropbox acts like any ‘ole folder on your computer, making it incredibly easy to use. It automatically syncs to a remote backup and to all of your other installations anytime you add, delete, or edit files. You can share folders with anyone in the world with a simple right-click.
Dropbox also has a very cool Gallery option – ideal for throwing together a quick portfolio or just sharing your photos in a simple, elegant way. You can check out a live gallery here
  3. Toggl – You are probably just like us and you do a million things a day- probably for every single individual at your company (or at least every sales rep). With all the things we’re responsible for it became difficult to keep up with how long we’ve spent on each project and also how long to plan for upcoming projects to take. We decided tracking our time would be the easiest way to get this done. With Toggl it is so easy for us to track time spent on projects. The stop-watch style time tracker and simple interface make it a breeze to add this extra step to our day. Toggl is really designed for agencies and contractors who need to bill time, but we’ve adapted it for our use and actually our whole office uses it now. Its a great tool for management  to keep a handle on where hours are being spent and also for individuals to see just how long it really takes to complete projects. Their reporting is pretty great too – we all use daily and weekly reports around here broken up by project and company.
  4. JotForm – JotForm and I go way back. It is hands down the best web form builder out there. And you can do just about everything you need to with it for free. Unlike most “freemium” programs JotForm doesn’t clutter your form up with ads or their branding. In fact, unless you look at the source code, you’d never be able to spot one of their forms. We use Jot to create quick forms for anything from event registrations to quote requests. While we do use our CRM integrated web forms for most of those needs, uses for JotForm still pop up all the time. Check out the video below to see just how simple JotForm is to use.

(and by the way, here’s the form we just created for the demo)

    • Should be Empty:

What you don’t see in the video is that you can also set up automated emails for notifications, responses, select a thank you message or landing page, and you can even download the full source code of the form to do some custom tweaks and changes to it.

  5. Synergy– I’m a Mac stuck in a PC world – and I think many of us are the same way. I’m lucky enough that everyone I work with understands that my Mac is a better tool for the job I do – unfortunately there are still certain things I just need a PC for. (For instance checking our website in Internet Explorer every time we make changes). I’ve found that running parrallels or VMWare just slows me down to the point that I want to rip my hair out. The best solution I’ve found for the problem is to run 2 machines. It seems archaic and wasteful to run 2 computers for one person, but it saves me my sanity. The problem with this approach? 2 keyboards. 2 mice. I stumbled across Synergy years ago at a former employer where I had the exact same issue of Mac and PC toggling – and I was thrilled! Synergy allows you to put your mouse and keyboard on your local network and then share them out to 2 or more computers. The machines can be running virtually any operating system and it works like a charm. So you can pack away your PC mouse and keyboard and run with just one set. The coolest thing Synergy has done since I started to use it is support clipboard functions across machines. You can’t even do that with Parrallels or VMWare – but Synergy allows you to cut and paste across 2 computers with ease.

New Energy Rebate Program for Ohio Manufacturers

Manufacturers and other non-resident Duke Energy customers in the state of Ohio who use more than 700,000 kWh per year are now eligible to receive rebates on energy projects that were completed on or after January 1, 2008.

The new program, Mercantile Self Direct, is a supplement to the existing Smart $aver Incentive Program and creates an opportunity for Ohio Duke Energy customers to apply for funds that could be used toward new energy efficiency projects that may not have otherwise happened. (not a Duke Energy customer? The Ohio Public Utilities Commission lists programs for other energy providers as well – or contact us and we’ll find out for you).

Prescriptive rebates are broken down by the following categories:

  • Process Equipment (including barrel blankets and hose insulation)
  • Lighting
  • Heating & Cooling
  • Window, Film, Thermostats
  • Chillers & Thermal Storage
  • Chiller Tune Ups
  • Motors/Pumps
  • Variable Frequency Drives
  • Food Service Equipment

Custom programs are also available for projects that do not fall into these categories.

UniTherm Customers have been taking advantage of incentive programs in states across the US and are getting back anywhere from 30 – 110% on the purchase of UniTherm systems. Not located in Ohio? Contact us to see what rebates are available in your area.

A #FBLT Confession

I often get asked why we don’t do much with our Facebook page – there’s not much more there than a few updates and links to our blog posts. We, just like every other marketing team we know, have a huge list of goals and items to execute on and at the end of the day we have to prioritize and go with what will bring the best returns both immediate and long term. To be perfectly honest with you I don’t think we’d be doing much better with Facebook even if we did put it on the schedule and push what little attention we have left over at the end of the week to it.

As an inbound marketer and SM activist I’m sometimes embarrassed that we haven’t done more with Facebook yet. But then I think about everything we have done and the level we’ve executed on. Because we prioritize and focus our energies where it pays to focus – we’re seeing returns on our marketing efforts.  [Read more…]

Failsafe Doesn’t Guarantee Safety

Many unfortunate disasters in the last few years have led to an increase in scrutiny of safety measures in oil, gas or petrochemical facility throughout the US and worldwide.

When discussing risk management efforts, many in the industry reference failsafe systems. While these systems can prove invaluable, they can also provide a false sense of security and allow facilities to overlook major safety concerns.

Failsafe equipment, defined by dictionary.com as “a secondary system that ensures continued operation even if the primary system fails,” may function as a backup solution, but does not necessarily ensure proper function of vital process controls during a fire. In any plant or refinery emergency, control is most important factor and often failsafe equipment lacks the technological sophistication to make critical decisions about when to initiate shutoff. Tripped prematurely, failsafe shutdowns might lead to even more unsafe conditions or costly facility issues.

Safety: Beyond Minimum Standards

With human life at stake, companies must consider safety concerns beyond the minimum requirements of OSHA, EPA or local industry standards. Failsafe equipment, which rarely includes a sufficient level of fireproofing, is often susceptible to damage and failure in the event of a high-temperature-rise fire.
