Safety Checklists for Manufacturers

safety, checklists, manufacturing safety, industrial safetyEven in the safest of facilities, failure to implement safety planning measures can lead to major injuries and in some cases, fatalities in the workplace. One of the most important planning tools is a clear safety checklist that lists the necessary conditions to ensure safety for all facility personnel.

Listing OSHA requirements and applicable safety laws that apply to your plan offers a solid starting point for creating a detailed safety checklist. Most likely, your company has already researched these requirements and taken steps to ensure compliance. Locate previous OSHA inspection reports to pinpoint any previous safety concerns.

Various industrial societies and safety research organizations offer safety knowledge and recommendations beyond minimum standard requirements. In addition to a wealth of free online information, both the American Society for Testing Materials and Underwriter’s Laboratories offer safety research, recommendations for testing safety products – think expert recommendations for building materials or fire protection products. Additionally, both organizations offer safety consultants and in depth training courses for plant managers, safety personnel or equipment operators.

When compiling a safety checklist, consider six main topics or sections to address:

  • Hazardous material handling
  • Fire prevention and protection
  • Hot surfaces and burns
  • Avoiding falls and spills
  • Personal Protection
  • Safe equipment operation

A Quick Guide to Energy Management Software

keyboard, energy management software, software, computer controlled systemsIf you’ve picked up any industrial trade journal or browsed the business section of the news for energy related topics, you’ve probably read about energy management software of some type. Everyone seems to agree that energy management software is the next big thing, but how will such systems actually help your business?

Energy management software generally provides options for evaluating effectiveness and ROI of efficiency projects or for measuring, tracking and controlling energy consumption to eliminate waste.

Software for Energy Efficiency Projects

With so many options to choose from, determining which energy efficiency projects to implement might seem a difficult task for any industrial facility. Employees tasked with reducing energy costs often have limited budgets and must prioritize new projects and plan for future implementation.

Through the Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) division the U.S. Department of Energy offers free calculators and software tools that allow you to analyze opportunities to reduce energy costs and help you calculate possible energy savings gained from energy efficiency projects. These tools help calculate the potential return on investment or paybacks for projects, like high temperature insulation jackets, allowing you to purchase the most cost-effective projects first and achieve the greatest amount of energy savings.

Beyond software tools, the EERE also provides a variety of training courses, seminars and webinars for those interested in reducing energy costs with software. Segmented by industry, these resources offer significant insight into options available for you to reduce energy costs.

Energy Management Systems

Available as basic software that controls lighting systems or more complex systems that measure, analyze and control energy consumption, efficiency software offers many custom options for improving efficiency. Sophisticated software systems monitor every aspect of energy consumption and manufacturing emissions, store data that you can use to pinpoint energy waste and send web or cell phone alerts notifying you of any issues.

With such a large range of software options available, determining which services you need isn’t always easy. According to a recent report by business research leader Verdantix, the best method for choosing appropriate management software lies in implementing readily available, free software, choosing a reputable software provider, and clearly outlining your needs prior to the sales process.

What systems are you currently using to monitor your energy usage?

5 Keys to Survival After the Recession: Modernized Marketing

LightbulbSince America’s emergence from the Great Recession, companies have begun examining products more closely to ensure profitability. As manufacturers strive to implement innovative, lean production processes, they must also look to modernize marketing efforts by developing appropriate and relevant products and finding ways to efficiently connect with a larger market of potential customers.

Understanding and Nurturing Company Resources

Critics of the US economy doubt the feasibility of American industrial growth due to stiff international competition, rising costs or taxes and government restrictions. However, one European country has overcome the same obstacles facing American manufacturers.

Germany, a country with few natural resources beyond its workers, stands as a powerful example of industrial success during the Great Recession. Rather than engaging in a price war with Chinese manufacturers, who boast the advantage of lower labor costs and fewer government restrictions, German companies focus on developing quality products in high demand.

Germans manufacturers maintain their distinctive level of craftsmanship by investing heavily in their highly-skilled workforce. By offering the superior luxury cars the Chinese want and the unsurpassed production equipment that the growing international market needs, the Germans are succeeding despite the challenges they face.

5 Keys to Survival After the Recession: Consistency vs Efficiency

Consistency-vs-EfficiencyManufacturers looking to dramatically increase profits must constantly reduce overhead costs and increase product output. Achieving this is often much easier said than done and in order to meet goals for short-term growth, many manufacturing leaders focus on the short-term solution of pushing employees to work harder, faster and more efficiently.

To actually generate sustained growth, manufactures must ensure that workers consistently follow processes and fully document problems so that management teams can review solutions, identify costly tasks and improve procedures.

Documenting: A Path to Success

Documenting and analyzing procedures requires a hybrid form of technical writing that involves many levels of company participation. Traditionally, companies outlined processes and hired a technical writer to create a static training manual for employees to follow.

Today, manufacturers who wish to implement and maintain an agile, responsive system of processes must outline a set of procedures via a company intranet or meeting-place for employees and team-leaders to contribute information about process failures and solutions.

5 Keys to Survival After the Recession: Innovative Manufacturing Technology

What do radios, neoprene, instant photography and nylon have in common? All were developed during or slightly after the Great Depression and drastically changed the course of manufacturing history as manufacturers desperately sought ways to efficiently produce groundbreaking new products.

Innovative Technology

According to Boston Consulting Group’s “Innovation 2010” report, innovation in manufacturing is vital to your survival as a manufacturer after the recession because “your competitors are themselves working very, very hard to become more innovative—they, too, see innovation as a top strategic priority.”

Companies in countries like Brazil and China “are increasingly investing more in it, and have redoubled their efforts in order to be positioned to thrive in the recovery,” making R&D more important now than ever before.

While many are reluctant to budget money for R&D, researching more efficient ways to create products can lead to substantial savings. Often, existing employees already have ideas that could lead to improvements or even a revolutionary new product line.

Companies can develop agile and adaptive manufacturing systems by including modeling and simulation tools into design processes and installing superior sensor and part genealogy systems to detect errors or defects before they effect an entire production run.
